Abstract

The impetus for this conceptual article was derived from the panel discussion on “Language Learning and Teaching in Digital Environment” in the 27th NELTA International Conference 2023 and the authors’ reflections on their experiences as teachers and teacher educators in Indonesia, particularly after the unprecedented lock-down. The recent school closure has off ered lessons learned on the need for digital pedagogy and led to the new awareness of the challenges and opportunities in the inevitable digital environment. This article discusses some of the major contextual changes and the future directions of digital pedagogy for language learning.

Author Biographies

Anita Lie, Professor, Widya Mandala Catholic University, Surabaya, Indonesia

Anita Lie is a professor at Widya Mandala Catholic University, Surabaya, Indonesia. Her areas of research are teacher professional development, English education, and language policy. She is a member of the Indonesian National Accreditation Agency. She was granted SEAMEO-Jasper Fellowship Award in 2000 for her research on English curriculum in Indonesia. She was a research fellow at University of California, Berkeley through the Indonesian  Program of Academic Recharging in 2011. In 2016, she got a research grant from American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS) Luce Fellowship for her research on heritage language learning among second generation of Indonesian-Americans in California. In 2018, she got a Dedicated Scholar Award from Kompas, a leading national newspaper in Indonesia.

Imelda Gozali, Faculty Member, Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University, Indonesia

Imelda Gozali is a Ph.D. student in the Graduate School of English Language Education, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Indonesia. She obtained her Master’s degree in English Language Education from Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University, where she is also working as a faculty member. Her current research interest is in teaching English writing, feedback literacy, the use of technology in language learning, and teacher professional development.

Agus Wardhono, Professor, Teacher Training Faculty at Universitas PGRI Ronggolawe Tuban, East Java, Indonesia

Agus Wardhono, PhD, M. Pd. is a professor in linguistics, supervisor in the English Department of Teacher Training Faculty at Universitas PGRI Ronggolawe Tuban, East Java Indonesia. He has been teaching English for Specifi c Purposes for 36 years since 1987. His area interests are EFL teaching, language testing, and translation. He has published research papers in National and International journals.
